There’s a few rooms to look around and a shop to use but not much more than this – you’ll mostly be venturing out into dungeons through the portal. The basic gameplay loop begins in the Ark, which acts as your base of operations. While it generally follows a standard JRPG template, some little tweaks to the formula keep Chaos Rings fresh and different from the sea of similar games, making it well worth a try. Voices here are fully Japanese (I haven’t played the mobile ports to confirm whether there was any English VA in them) while music is a decent mix of tracks that are a bit too quiet while you’re actually playing, but if you can hear them there’s some catchy and addictive songs here.

I found them universally gorgeous – winding forests with green trees everywhere, ruined cities blocked by fallen buildings and futuristic space ship corridors with stained glass windows. Their only downfall is that each area tends to feel particularly small and contains some stretched textures which is obviously more noticeable on Vita than a mobile phone – but this is only a minor issue and certainly if you’ve been playing PSP games on Sony’s newest handheld, it won’t be too jarring. I was also really impressed with the backgrounds, which are pre-rendered in the vein of PS1 JRPG’s like Final Fantasy VII which holds a lot of nostalgia for me. It’s a shame that the character portraits during 2D conversation scenes aren’t of the same quality (they look stern when talking and are completely static exactly lighting up when they talk) and that they contain a few jagged edges, but at least monsters are an interesting mix of towering behemoths, creepy tentacle plants and all sorts in between that are fascinating to first encounter. They’re detailed and realistically proportioned and contain lots of little flourishes tribal clothing of Eluca and Zhamo or the way Musiea waves her rapier in the air to cast spells. The main one of these is character models, which look pretty good. While initially a stunning achievement for a mobile title, the graphics of Chaos Rings make less of an impact on Vita – although still manage to impress in a few key areas. It’s the world here that’s the most fascinating, as you explore each new location from your home base in the Ark and wonder just how this place came to be, that really helps to sell the appeal of Chaos Rings (and the truth is fully revealed eventually!). The titular rings do tie into the overall plot, which offers a solid sci-fi story with plenty of twists along the way and as previously mentioned definitely took me by surprise, although it does take a while to get going. What this means is that each character is given their own detailed backstory and motivations which are explored through their individual campaigns, although you will be given little nuggets of information throughout the other stories. Escher and Musiea for example each hate each other initially (and have particularly abrasive personalities) but the way their fates intertwined through a shared history felt somewhat cheesy at first, but was pulled off well with some genuinely touching moments over time. It’s the same for the others with Olgar and Vahti being particular favourites of mine, but each of the couples brings their own energy and vibe (which makes it all the more heartbreaking when you come up against them in combat with only one victor possible).

Then you replay the whole thing again as the second couple, before returning again with each of the remaining pairs until the full truth is unveiled – meaning a lot of repetition, but a slow build up to some fantastic revelations in the final few hours that really weren’t what I was expecting when I first booted up. The way Chaos Rings tells its story is definitely unique – you begin playing as one of two couples (I chose Escher and Musiea) and once you’ve completed the game, you’re encouraged to return for an extra level to reveal more about the world, which still leaves questions unanswered.

At the start of Chaos Rings, ten people are whisked away to a space station where they’re paired up and informed by a giant celestial robot that they’ll be forced to fight through the Ark Arena (a series of combat challenges) for the ultimate award of immortality. After initial disbelief at their situation, they slowly adapt to this strange new world and attempt to unravel its mysteries while playing along with the rules of this bizarre game.
